Sourcing Buy American Sheaves for Buy American Projects

The Loos & Co., Inc. eSheaves.com engineering team can help you meet Buy American sheave sourcing requirements for your next federally funded project

pulleyUpdates to the Buy American act were published recently. As part of the updated regulations, steel products, including steel and stainless steel wire rope sheaves, will need to be at least 95% domestic, up from the previous 50%, to qualify as an American made end product when used in federally funded construction projects, equipment builds, or machine purchases. Many supply chains that have been developed through the years to meet the previous requirements will need to re-source materials to reach the new threshold. Because of our access to Made in the USA products and raw materials, Loos & Co. generally, and esheaves.com specifically, can locate qualifying sheaves, engineer qualifying solutions, build qualifying systems, and mange these changes to the supply chain to keep you in compliance with the recent changes.

eSheaves.com is part of the Loos & Co., Inc. family of products and companies that have been supporting American manufacturing for over 60 years. With a focus on domestic sources for materials to meet a diverse set of sourcing requirements, we rely on the output of domestic mills for raw feed stock,  including our copper, aluminum, and multiple grades of steel and stainless steel. We are proud to offer the same Made in America raw materials that we use for Military Specification Hardware, Copper and Aluminum Sleeves, and cable assembly tools for our esheaves.com steel pulleys and sheaves.

What does Buy American mean?

The Buy American Act provides for preferential price treatment in federal contracts or projects funded by federal dollars for steel products Made in the USA by American Manufacturers. To qualify as an America Made product, the law stipulates that the final product must be manufactured in the United States and no less than 95% of the value of the product comes from American sources. In other words, for a wire rope or aircraft cable sheave to comply with this requirement, it has to be manufactured in the USA, and that labor, plus any domestic components used (steel, stainless steel) must have a value greater than 95% of the total cost.

Are there other sourcing requirements in the Wire Rope Sheave Industry? Yes.

  • Domestic Sheaves & Pulleys: In order to be called “domestic”, the sheaves and pulleys must be milled, split, and assembled in the USA, with components (steel) that may have been made outside of the USA.
  • Buy America/100% Domestic: When a requirement calls for 100% domestic, agencies are looking for wire rope sheaves which are manufactured in the USA from components that are also manufactured in the USA—including the steel mill products of billet and rod used to make the bar stock for machining.

How do you specify a sheave to meet the above requirements?
